9 Things I Stopped Doing to Build Real Confidence

Let’s be real, confidence can look different every day.
Some mornings it’s strutting into a room like you own the place. Other days it’s just managing to get out of bed and put on clean clothes.

For a long time, I thought confidence was something you wore.
If my hair looked good, if my makeup was flawless, if my outfit hit that perfect “I tried but didn’t try too hard” balance, I felt unstoppable.
But if one thing went wrong, bad hair day, outfit flop, breakout, my confidence fell apart.

That’s when I realised: my confidence was hanging by a mascara wand.
It looked strong, but it wasn’t steady.

True confidence is quieter. It’s that subtle hum of “I can handle this,” even when everything feels a bit wobbly.
It’s less about pretending to have it all figured out, and more about trusting yourself enough to figure it out as you go.

Here are nine things I stopped doing, and why it changed everything.

Number 1.

I stopped waiting to “feel ready.”

If I waited until I felt fully confident to do something, I’d still be sitting there “researching” it.
Confidence doesn’t show up with a marching band. It sneaks in after you take the first step, shaky voice, sweaty palms, racing heart and all.

Start messy. Start small. Start anyway.
The most confident people aren’t fearless, they’re just tired of waiting for perfect timing.

Number 2.

I stopped comparing my behind-the-scenes to everyone else’s highlight reel.

We all do it, scroll through someone’s feed and suddenly feel ten steps behind in life.
But here’s the thing: no one’s posting their breakdown in the shower or their third reheat of yesterday’s coffee.

Your timeline doesn’t need to match anyone else’s.
The best thing I ever did for my self-esteem? Mute, unfollow, or step back when I felt myself spiralling. Protect your peace like it’s skincare.

Number 3.

I stopped apologising for taking up space.

I used to apologise for everything.
“Sorry for talking too much.”
“Sorry I look tired.”
“Sorry I need a minute.”

At some point, I realised I wasn’t actually sorry, I was just scared of being “too much.”
Now, I replace “sorry” with “thank you.”
“Thank you for waiting.” “Thank you for understanding.” “Thank you for listening.”
It’s such a small swap, but it’s powerful. Gratitude keeps your worth intact. Guilt drains it.

Number 4.

I stopped confusing confidence with fearlessness.

Here’s the truth: confident people feel fear, they just don’t let it drive.
Fear means you care. It’s your body saying, “This matters.”

When I feel scared now, I remind myself: this is a sign I’m stretching, not failing.
Courage and fear can absolutely hold hands.

Number 5.

I stopped brushing off my wins.

“I mean, it’s not a big deal…”
“I just got lucky.”
“I could’ve done better.”

Sound familiar? Same.
For the longest time, I couldn’t let myself enjoy progress.
Now, I celebrate every little thing.
Finished that project? Amazing. Got through a rough day without spiralling? Iconic. Took a break without guilt? You’re evolving, babe.

"Confidence grows when you start keeping score of your wins, not your worries."

Number 6.

I stopped needing everyone to clap for me.

I used to crave validation like caffeine, constant external approval.
But chasing everyone’s applause is exhausting and inconsistent.

Now, I check in with myself instead:
Did I show up with honesty? With effort? With heart?
If yes, that’s enough.

Quiet confidence is knowing you did your best, even if no one noticed.

Number 7 .

I stopped wearing exhaustion like a badge of honour.

At some point, we all got tricked into thinking being “busy” equals being important.
I used to run myself into the ground, call it productivity, and wonder why I felt burnt out and brittle.

Now, rest is part of the plan, not a reward for surviving it.
Confidence doesn’t come from constant motion. It comes from sustainable energy — and that requires boundaries, naps, and water that’s not coffee.

Number 8.

I stopped ignoring my gut.

My intuition used to whisper, “This isn’t right.”
And my overthinking brain would reply, “Shh. Don’t be dramatic.”

Guess who was right every time?
"Your intuition isn’t woo-woo; it’s wisdom."
When you listen to it,  even in small ways, you build trust with yourself. And that’s the bedrock of confidence.

Number 9.

I stopped thinking confidence was for “other people.”

The ones with the loud laughs, the perfect timing, the easy smiles.
I thought they were born with it, and I’d missed the queue.

But confidence isn’t DNA. It’s self-trust, built through repetition.
It’s following through on small promises to yourself until you realise, “Oh… I can rely on me.”

Final Thought

Confidence isn’t a switch you flip, it’s a practice you nurture.
And it’s not about being the boldest voice in the room. It’s about being kind enough to yourself that you stop dimming your light.
