Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that uses the power of positive suggestion to bring about subconscious change to your thoughts, feelings and behaviour.

During a hypnotherapy session, a trained hypnotherapist guides you into a deep state of relaxation with words, repetition and imagery. When you’re under hypnosis you are able to focus deeply, ignoring distractions and becoming more open to guided suggestions to make healthy changes in  your life.

Hypnosis can help you gain control over behaviours and habits you'd like to change, and it may help you cope better with anxiety, stress or pain. Although you're more open to suggestion during hypnosis, you don't lose control over your behaviour during a hypnotherapy session. You are fully conscious and able to stop the session at any time and return to a waking, alert state whenever you’d like. 

Hypnosis makes it easier to experience suggestions but doesn’t ever force you to do or experience anything. 

How do people describe the hypnotic experience?

Most people describe a hypnotherapy session as very pleasant. You will likely feel very calm and focused, and although your thoughts might drift you will probably find it easy to bring your attention back to the words being spoken. Your body might feel very heavy and deeply relaxed while you’re under hypnosis, but once the session is over you should feel alert and back to normal.  Some people fall asleep, which is also fine, as the hypnotic suggestions will be received by the subconscious mind.

Hypnotherapy is a safe, complementary and alternative treatment. However, it is not  appropriate for people with epilepsy or severe mental health issues, such as someone suffering from psychotic symptoms (hallucinations and delusions).
