Military CBHT Study | Hypnotherapy Research | Clear Minds

When most people think about treating anxiety and depression, their doctor’s first recommendation is usually cognitive behavioural therapy — CBT. It’s the gold standard, backed by decades of evidence. So when a 2024 clinical study found that cognitive-behavioural hypnotherapy (CBHT) produced even greater reductions in both anxiety and depression than standard CBT, it was a significant moment for the field.

The study, published in September 2024, compared the effects of CBT and CBHT on military personnel — a population that experiences exceptionally high levels of psychological stress, anxiety, and depression. The results were clear: both therapies worked, but the group receiving hypnotherapy showed significantly stronger improvements across both conditions.

What Did the Study Find?

Researchers evaluated military personnel who met clinical criteria for anxiety and depression and assigned them to either standard CBT or CBHT. Both groups received structured therapeutic sessions over the course of the trial period.

At the end of the intervention:

  • Both groups showed significant reductions in anxiety and depression scores
  • The CBHT group showed greater reductions in both conditions than the CBT-only group
  • Cognitive-behavioural hypnotherapy was well-tolerated and showed no significant adverse effects

A second related study, published in December 2024, went further to evaluate the standalone effectiveness of CBHT in a military cohort — and again confirmed that hypnotherapy produced clinically meaningful reductions in both anxiety and depressive symptoms.

Why Military Personnel? And Why Does It Matter for Everyone?

Military populations are particularly relevant for this kind of research because they represent some of the most treatment-resistant, high-severity cases of anxiety and depression. High stress exposure, hypervigilance, trauma history, and cultural resistance to mental health treatment all create a challenging therapeutic environment.

When a therapy works better than CBT in that setting, it tells us something important: hypnotherapy isn’t just a gentle supplement to “real” treatment. It actively enhances the cognitive and emotional change processes at the core of psychological recovery.

For the general population — people dealing with everyday anxiety, chronic stress, low mood, or burnout — the implications are even more promising. If CBHT outperforms CBT in a high-severity clinical group, the gap in milder-to-moderate presentations may be even wider.

Why Does Hypnotherapy Work Better for Anxiety and Depression?

CBT works by helping people identify and reframe negative thought patterns. It’s effective — but it operates primarily at the conscious, analytical level. The patient has to catch unhelpful thoughts, challenge them, and practise doing this deliberately over time.

Hypnotherapy adds a critical layer: it allows therapeutic suggestions and new thought patterns to be embedded at a subconscious level, where automatic emotional responses are stored. In a hypnotic state, the brain enters a mode of heightened focus and reduced critical resistance, meaning new beliefs and perspectives can take hold more deeply and with less friction.

When you combine the structured cognitive framework of CBT with the subconscious reach of hypnotherapy — you get CBHT. The structure of CBT guides what changes to make. Hypnotherapy makes the changes stick faster and at a deeper level.

What This Means in Practice

For someone experiencing anxiety or depression, this research matters because it shifts hypnotherapy from the category of “alternative” to clinically superior in key comparisons. You don’t have to choose between a proven therapy and hypnotherapy — the evidence increasingly shows that combining them produces better outcomes than either alone.

The same logic applies to digital hypnotherapy. The key mechanisms at work — guided relaxation, focused suggestion, subconscious reprogramming — are fully accessible through a well-designed audio-led session. Research on self-hypnosis and app-delivered hypnotherapy consistently shows that the clinical benefits translate outside of a clinical room.
