IBS Hypnotherapy: 2-Year Results | Research | Clear Minds

Irritable bowel syndrome affects roughly one in seven adults worldwide — and for many, it's a daily battle with pain, bloating, unpredictable bowel habits, and the anxiety that comes with all three. Now, a landmark 2025 study has delivered some of the strongest long-term evidence yet that gut-directed hypnotherapy isn't just a short-term fix. The improvements can last for years.

What the Study Found

Published in June 2025 in the United European Gastroenterology Journal, the research by Jenny Lövdahl and colleagues followed 289 IBS patients who had completed a 12-week programme of gut-directed hypnotherapy — delivered by specially trained nurses, either one-to-one or in small group sessions.

Participants were assessed at baseline, then again at six months, one year, and two years post-treatment. The primary measure was a clinically validated symptom severity score (IBS-SSS), with a reduction of 50 points or more counted as a meaningful treatment response.

The results were striking:

  • 64.3% of patients responded immediately after treatment
  • 62.8% were still responding at the six-month mark
  • 64.7% at one year
  • 61.8% at the two-year follow-up

In other words, the therapeutic gains held almost perfectly stable across two full years. Importantly, IBS symptom severity, gut-specific anxiety, general anxiety, and depressive symptoms all dropped significantly — and stayed down throughout the entire follow-up period (p < 0.001).

The study also identified who tended to benefit most: younger patients, those receiving individual sessions rather than group therapy, and those with more severe symptoms at the outset.

Why This Matters

Most IBS treatments — whether dietary, pharmacological, or psychological — struggle with the same problem: relapse. Symptoms often creep back within weeks or months of stopping treatment. This 2-year follow-up data is therefore genuinely unusual in the field of functional gut disorders.

The mechanism behind gut-directed hypnotherapy's durability is increasingly well understood. IBS is now widely regarded as a disorder of the gut-brain axis — a bidirectional communication network linking the central nervous system to the enteric nervous system of the gut. Chronic stress, anxiety, and trauma can dysregulate this axis, amplifying pain signals, disrupting gut motility, and triggering the hypersensitivity that characterises IBS.

Gut-directed hypnotherapy works by inducing a deeply relaxed mental state and using targeted suggestions to calm this gut-brain communication. Over a course of sessions, patients learn to modulate their physiological responses to gut sensations — reducing visceral hypersensitivity and quietening the anxiety that typically amplifies IBS symptoms.

The fact that nurses — rather than specialist psychologists — delivered the therapy in this trial is also significant. It signals that this is a scalable, real-world intervention that can be deployed within routine healthcare settings, not just specialist clinics.

How Clear Minds Can Help

The Clear Minds app brings gut-directed hypnotherapy to your phone, available any time and without a waiting list. Our IBS-focused hypnotherapy sessions are designed to calm the gut-brain connection, lower gut-specific anxiety, and help your nervous system learn a new, more settled response to digestive sensations.

Whether your IBS is driven by stress, dietary triggers, or years of anxiety around your symptoms, the guided audio sessions work with your subconscious mind to shift the patterns that keep the cycle going. No medication, no side effects — just a clinically grounded approach that the research increasingly supports.

The 2025 study is a reminder that when hypnotherapy works for IBS, it tends to keep working. For the majority of people who respond, the benefits are not just immediate — they're lasting.

Could hypnotherapy bring lasting relief to your IBS?

The research shows that gut-directed hypnotherapy can calm the gut-brain connection and deliver real, sustained symptom relief for IBS. Clear Minds brings those same principles to a guided app experience you can try for seven days, completely free.
