When an athlete goes down with an injury, the standard playbook kicks in: physiotherapy, rest, ice, rehab exercises. What rarely makes it onto that list — but arguably should — is hypnotherapy. A comprehensive 2025 systematic review published in the International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology has changed that conversation significantly.
What the 2025 Systematic Review Found
Researchers Miró, Mesperuza, Jensen, Day, García, and Miró conducted a wide-ranging analysis of the existing evidence, searching six major academic databases — PubMed, PsychINFO, Web of Science, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and SPORTDiscus — from inception right through to October 2024. From 613 papers initially retrieved, 13 studies met the quality threshold for full inclusion in the review.
The findings were clear: statistically significant associations emerged between therapeutic hypnosis and three key outcomes in athletes — improved athletic performance, faster recovery from injury, and reduced psychological distress during sport. Across multiple sports, disciplines, and injury types, hypnosis consistently showed a meaningful positive effect.
The authors noted that while most studies used pre-post-test designs rather than full randomised controlled trials, the consistency of results across different sporting contexts lends real weight to the findings. They called for future research to build on this with larger samples and standardised protocols — a sign not of scepticism, but of a field maturing rapidly.
Injury Recovery: The Most Underreported Finding
Of the three outcome categories, injury recovery may be the most surprising to people outside the field. Most of us understand that hypnotherapy can reduce pain perception — that's well-established. But the idea that it can meaningfully accelerate physical rehabilitation requires a bit more explanation.
The mechanism is rooted in the nervous system. Injury doesn't just damage tissue — it creates a cascade of psychological responses: fear of reinjury, loss of body confidence, disrupted sleep, heightened cortisol, and anxiety around returning to performance. Each of these, in isolation, slows healing. Together, they can make a three-month recovery stretch to six.
Hypnotherapy addresses the psychological dimension of injury by guiding the brain into a deeply receptive state where unhelpful beliefs about the body can be replaced with constructive ones. Suggestions around healing, pain tolerance, and restoration of movement confidence can directly influence how quickly an athlete returns to full function — not as a placebo, but as a targeted intervention on the mind-body feedback loop that governs recovery.
Why the Mental Game Is the Whole Game
Elite sport has known this for decades. The difference between two athletes of equal physical ability so often comes down to mental state — the ability to stay calm under pressure, recover quickly from setbacks, manage pre-competition anxiety, and maintain focus deep into fatigue. Therapeutic hypnosis addresses all of these domains simultaneously.
The review found that hypnosis reduced psychological distress in athletes engaging in their chosen sport — a finding that matters not just during competition, but throughout the grinding week-to-week reality of training, recovery, and pressure. Reduced distress means better quality sleep, lower baseline cortisol, improved motivation, and a nervous system that isn't running on threat-mode 24 hours a day.
For recreational athletes and active people — not just elite competitors — these benefits translate directly. Whether you're navigating a running injury, trying to push through a performance plateau, or simply trying to stay consistent with exercise, your mental state is doing more heavy lifting than most training plans acknowledge.

How Clear Minds Supports Active Recovery
Clear Minds isn't a sports app — but its benefits extend naturally into physical performance and recovery. The hypnotherapy sessions available on the platform target stress reduction, sleep quality, pain perception, and mental resilience: the exact four variables that research identifies as the psychological levers of physical recovery.
Athletes and active people who use the app regularly report better rest between training sessions, reduced anxiety around injury, and a stronger sense of mental control — outcomes that line up directly with what the 2025 systematic review identified as the core benefits of therapeutic hypnosis in sport.
As the evidence base matures and more rigorous trials are published, therapeutic hypnosis is moving from the fringes of sports science into the mainstream. For now, this systematic review is a clear signal: if you're serious about recovery, it's time to take the mental side as seriously as the physical.
