Unwrap the Christmas Spirit: Find Joy and Meaning This Festive Season

From Festive Joy to Festive Overload

“Ho, Ho - it’s Christmas!!” she says through a teeth-clenched, fake smile.

A season that is usually wrapped in glitter, warmth, family, and festive cheer...

At least, that’s how it’s supposed to feel! And did, once upon a time.

Like most things in this ever-changing, fast-paced modern world— it has shifted, including the meaning of Christmas.

It has gone from being a simple celebration of togetherness into a high-pressure production requiring the budget of a small country, and the stamina of an Olympic athlete!

It didn't take a lot to make the magic of Christmas happen. Decades ago, you’d get a single present from each family member, enjoy a home-cooked dinner and the company of your loved ones. This was enough to fill the holiday with more than enough joy.

The Price We Pay for the “Perfect” Christmas

Today we spend hundreds, even thousands— chasing the perfect gifts, decorations, experiences, and more. We want everything to be perfect. And yet, we’re willing to put ourselves at risk (mentally & physically, debt…the lot!) as we always strive to be the best.

You might even find yourself dropping £1000 on a shopping weekend before December even begins.

Christmas Day arrives and passes with a table overloaded with too much food, a living room bursting with gifts, kids vanishing into their new tech gadgets without so much as a “thank you.”

While you’re left staring at the mountain of wrapping paper and dishes in the sink, wondering where your bank balance and sanity disappeared to.

Then, the dread creeps in:
How am I going to get through January? Why do I feel so stressed? Is this what Christmas is supposed to feel like?”

Well, here’s the truth, Christmas was never meant to be about running up debt as a result of excessiveness, feeling under pressure, or needing perfection.

It’s meant to be about connection. It’s about feeling gratitude. And also, it’s about slowing down and taking a moment to cherish all the love and joy around you.

It’s about being present. This doesn’t mean you’ve got to buy the most expensive gift to show someone you’re thinking about them.

The spirit of Christmas is not something you buy, but something you cultivate.

Step Back from Chaos and Remember True Christmas Spirit

So this year take a step back from all the festive chaos. Take a deep breath and loosen the pressure a little. Find a moment to rediscover the real Christmas spirit.

The scented candles you wanted are sold out?... The PS5 or iPhone 16 Pro didn’t make it into the sleigh?... You missed a few Christmas cards?... It’s okay, it’s not the end of the world!

What matters is everything you’ve done already, until now. You must take credit for how hard you’ve worked this year and how much love you pour into your family. Your time and dedication shouldn’t be overlooked.

All the ways, either seen and unseen, where you show up for people. You deserve to recognise and celebrate this!

Don’t be hard on yourself or put yourself under too much pressure. If you miss a few things out this Christmas it’s fine. They don’t define Christmas. Instead, you define it by being kinder to yourself.

Take a moment to rest and reset. Breathe in and out, deep breaths. Remember to enjoy and that you deserve care and happiness too

Christmas doesn’t need to be perfect to be beautiful. It doesn’t need mountains of gifts to be meaningful. It doesn’t need endless stress to be successful.

What truly matters is connection.
Connection with loved ones, yes! But also connection with yourself.
